The Telepathic Butcher Boy

I used to practice reading every customer’s mind,

Steak, mince, sausages, bacon without the rind.

My reason for serving customers with such speed

Wasn’t motivated by monetary greed,

Instead, I gained great happiness

From being good at my job and a success.

I sold cuts of meat of many kinds

When I got better at reading minds.

I found most people’s minds could be read,

Then other thoughts started entering my head,

Topside, silverside, spirits from the other side,

They blew my mind both far and wide.

I was bombarded by thoughts from every plane

And succumbed the only way, by going insane!

(However, now I think I’ve cracked the code

And rarely go into overload.)

The Ballad of Robert Smith Part 1

Bob Smith is in his flat in Vernon Drive

Waiting for his paperboy to arrive.

Bob needs the paper to pack his suitcase

As that night he plans to steal a rare vase.

In his life Bob has always been taking

And recently he took up housebreaking.

Lately Bob has been having a bad time

So he has taken up a life of crime.

He has burgled five properties to date

And looks at his clock as the boy is late.

Bob had thrown out lots of papers that day

And the bin men had taken them away

And now Bob was wishing that he’d kept some

As he feared the paperboy might not come.

He had tidied his flat on the Sunday

As the bins were emptied on a Monday.

Bob went to the door of his first floor flat

And at last a paper lay on his mat.

Bob let out a sigh as he’d all he’d need

To carry out his planned dastardly deed.

Bob put the paper into the suitcase

And then wearily looked around his place.

His furniture had all seen better days

As he’d got his stuff through dubious ways.

Bob had become a better housebreaker

Than he had ever been a homemaker.

Bob was a bit of a lazy fellow

And his wallpaper was turning yellow.

The carpet was also covered with stains

And poor Bob didn’t even have the brains

To improve his lot by changing his ways

So he could enjoy a lot better days.

Bob imagined he was a normal bloke

As he liked to gamble, drink beer and smoke.

As well as not having a lot of brains

Bob’s flat contained his ill-gotten gains.

He thought of each burglary as a job

And that night the house he wanted to rob

Belonged to a couple who were away

Together for a boating holiday.

Bob heard about the couple at lunchtime

The Ballad of Robert Smith Part 2

And that night he planned to commit the crime.

Bob’s mate Fred Williams had just done a job

At the house Bob made up his mind to rob.

Fred was a painter and decorator

And Bob Smith was Fred’s interrogator.

Bob and Fred are in the local pub

That Bob calls his mental health social club.

“Where were you over the weekend?” said Bob.

“I was very busy doing a job

For the wealthy couple down Chestnut Way

Who are away for a holiday.

The couple have wealthy friends who have got

Some kind of boat or fancy yacht.

They’re coming back tomorrow from their trip

Aboard the ‘Wandering Star’ sailing ship.

For the whole job I was paid half a grand

And the great thing was it was cash in hand.

However I was told that the smell of paint

Sometimes makes the lady of the house feel faint

So while they were on the ‘Wandering Star’

I’d to leave the windows slightly ajar.

I hope the couple are pleased with the job,

But the house is a prime target to rob.

There’s a vase in one room I didn’t do

That I wager is worth a pound or two.”

Bob heard the details he wanted to hear

As he listened while enjoying his beer

And Fred Williams hadn’t the slightest clue

Of the housebreaking job Bob planned to do.

After the pub Bob Smith the housebreaker

And Fred the painter and decorator

Went down the road to the local baker

Then both went to their friendly bookmaker.

Bob and Fred were a couple of losers

As they frequented bookies and boozers.

Fred gambled heavily with his monkey

And put one hundred pounds on a donkey.

By the time Bob and Fred called it a day

Fred had nearly thrown his monkey away.

Fred Williams felt extremely dejected

About all the donkeys he’d selected

And the depressed painter and housebreaker

Left an extremely happy bookmaker.

The Ballad of Robert Smith Part 3

Back in his flat Bob is having a snooze

After the afternoon’s punting and booze.

Bob wakes up and quickly looks at the time

Then remembers about his life of crime.

Bob’s clock tells him it’s nine o’clock at night

So Bob rises and puts on the main light.

Bob puts some sausages under the grill

And decides to wait for an hour until

It really gets dark so housebreaker Bob

Can set off in the night to do his job.

Bob washes his face to clear his head

Then enjoys his sausages in white bread

Along with a can of beer from the fridge

To give Bob Smith a shot of Dutch courage.

Bob then scrunched up the paper in his case

And was off like a shot to steal the vase.

Bob Smith walked through the streets dressed in jet black

Then found the house and went right round the back.

The window was open as Fred had said,

With adrenalin rushing to Bob’s head,

He opened the window wide and climbed in

Knowing that he was committing a sin.

Bob the robber felt as high as a kite

As he speedily switched on his flashlight

And went round the rooms looking for the prize,

But suddenly Bob Smith got a surprise.

A motor car’s headlights lit up the house,

Bob froze like a timid rabbit or mouse.

It was the rich couple who had came back,

Then Bob almost had a panic attack.

It crossed his mind whether to fight

Or go back to the window and take flight.

Bob very sensibly chose to take flight,

Went to the window and threw out the flashlight.

Bob climbed out the window leaving his case

And ran away like he was in a race.

He arrived at his flat clean out of breath

And because of his smoking close to death.

The first thing he did was go to his fridge

And opened a can for more Dutch courage

Then sat down in his armchair still shaking

After his night of foiled housebreaking.

As Bob sat in his chair drinking his beer

The Ballad of Robert Smith Part 4

He thought about his life in the last year.

He thought how his life couldn’t get much worse

And how he’d been under some kind of curse.

Bob used to be the same as his mate Fred

But Bob Smith’s business went into the red.

He owed so much money all over the small town

That the Inland Revenue closed him down.

Bob Smith filed for bankruptcy and became

A poor man with a very bad name.

Bob’s wife treated him like a dirty rat

And threw him out of their council flat.

Luckily Bob hasn’t got any kids

Which is just as well when he hit the skids.

He was homeless then went to live with Fred

And used Fred’s worn out sofa as a bed

Then got a council flat of his own

In a council redevelopment zone

Which meant the estate was very run down

In an extremely seedy part of the town.

Bob was only twenty-seven years old

When his worldly possessions were all sold

To help pay back some of his massive debts

He’d built up due to his booze and bets.

As Bob sat in his old armchair drinking

He started nostalgically thinking

About the time he spent going through school

And how he used to play the fool.

Bob didn’t do well in education

But luckily got an occupation

As a kind of apprentice engineer,

But held that job for barely a year

Then got sacked for stealing some of the stock

And for fiddling hours on the clock.

Then Bob was out of work for years

And developed a taste for drinking beers.

He wasn’t really looking for a job,

But met a man who took pity on Bob

And offered him some casual training

In private painting and decorating.

Bob speedily picked up the painting trade

And enjoyed the extra money he made.

Joe Gribble was his new employer’s name

And working the grey market was his game.

The Ballad of Robert Smith Part 5

Cash in hand and a life of crime,

Bob rapidly served out his time.

Bob visited the bookie everyday

And frittered nearly all his pay away.

Then a new woman came into Bob’s life

And very soon Susan became Bob’s wife

So Bob Smith flitted from his parent’s house

And went to live with his new spouse.

Then after moving into Susan’s flat

Bob won fifteen hundred pounds on the flat.

He then decided to go it alone

And start a wee business of his own.

He started to draw up a business plan

And bought lots of equipment and a van.

Bob was happy he now was his own boss

And didn’t worry that he might make a loss.

For the first time in his life Bob felt glad

And in the local rag he placed an ad.

He got a printer to print a flyer:

“Painter and decorator for hire”

I’ll do all your painting and decorate

For a really reasonable daily rate.

Bob Smith frittered away all of his cash,

But with his van and his tools he looked real flash.

Bob got lots of credit wherever he went

And lost track of all the money he spent.

This charade went on for about three years

Till the time came for tantrums and many sad tears.

The Inland Revenue made a demand

For taxes on all the work “cash in hand”

And when Bob Smith couldn’t afford to pay

The taxman took all his assets away.

‘Twas as though Bob Smith was under a curse

His life after that went from bad to worse.

Bob’s beer was finished so he went to bed

With all these thoughts running through his head.

Bob hit the pillow, but didn’t sleep well

And woke up with the hangover from hell.

Reluctantly Bob got out of his bed

And took some painkillers for his sore head.

He put on the kettle to make some tea

And reflected on his housebreaking spree.

The main drawback about Bob’s life of crime

The Ballad of Robert Smith Part 6

Was if he got caught and had to do time.

Bob made up his mind to pack it all in

And give up his dastardly life of sin

So he’d avoid the judge’s hammer

And escape doing time in the slammer.

Bob thought I’ll do my best to change my ways

And find a path out of the stealing maze.

Bob’s head was still sore and he was sweating

As he thought I’ll stop the booze and betting.

Bob thought, “I’ll try to set myself a goal,

Find myself a job and come off the dole.”

He was at a turning point in his life

After losing his business and his wife.

Bob then had a shave, got showered and dressed

With a new feeling of vigour and zest.

He thought to himself I’ll go for a stroll

And look for honest jobs at the dole.

Bob opened his door, but on the landing

A couple of well dressed men were standing.

“Robert Smith?” said the taller of the two,

“We’ve got a number of questions for you.”

Bob felt squeamish and was taken aback

Like he was having a panic attack.

The men flashed badges, as they were coppers,

Belonging to the force of crime stoppers.

Then four uniformed policemen appeared

And Bob felt physically sick and weird.

The policemen uncovered in no time

The stolen goods from Robert’s life of crime.

Bob thought of his life in a prison cell

And began to feel even more unwell.

He pleaded guilty to his life of crime

And now faced doing a stretch of time.

Our Bob was an open and a shut case

As when Bob had left behind his suitcase

The police found out about his caper

As Bob Smith’s address was on the paper.

The paper shop had written Bob’s address

On his copy of the ‘Evening Express’

As the paperboy was new to the route

So the police were able to prosecute

And Bob came under the judge’s hammer

Getting seven months in the slammer!

Paranoid World 01

I’m being followed by a spy

From the American FBI.

This nosey American snooper

Thinks I’m a star-ship trooper

Sent by beings from outer space

To spy on the human race.

This guy keeps close to the ground

And everyday follows me around

And I know that he’s there

Because I see his suspicious stare.

To me it seems to be quite plain

This American guy is a bit insane

Because I’m obviously just the same

As the next person in this game

So I just ignore him and leave him alone

While I talk to my Cosmic Phone! J

I was being followed by a spy

From the American FBI.

This spy was a real nutcase

Who thought I came from outer space

To spy on the human race

So I led him a merry chase.

I walked to my work each weekday

To earn my modest monthly pay

Then went to my local every night

Because I’m not a Rechabite.

I didn’t try to elude him,

But soon managed to delude him

Into thinking I’m not a spy,

I’m just an ordinary guy

Who’s bored out of his mind

Studying life forms called mankind! J

Paranoid World 03

I was followed by the FBI

Because they thought I was a star-ship spy

Because I sent a note to their leading one

About harnessing the light from the Sun.

Now they’ve gone home in a big jet plane

Wondering who on Earth is really sane.

The FBI have gone back to base

Because Russians put a mirror into space

To reflect sunlight in such a way

As to, in fact, turn night into day.

This is the idea of which I wrote

When I sent President Bush Senior a note

Because I think mirrors in space

Might solve some problems that we face,

Because I think vast mirrors in space

Might help to save the human race. J

Paranoid World 04

Because they thought I was a star-ship spy.

Now the FBI have gone away,

I’m being watched by the CIA.

They too think I’m from outer space

To spy on the human race

So I play along with their game

And pretend that’s why I’ve came,

But really I’m here from outer space

To help most of the human race

By sending poems to a top station

Which broadcasts to the British nation.

My poems and their interpretation

Might be heard by this world’s population

In songs about reincarnation

Which might be humankind’s salvation. J

Paranoid World 05

I was being watched by the CIA,

But now I think they’ve gone away

And I think I’ve been left alone

To communicate with my Cosmic Phone.

We’ve lots of topics to talk about,

Such as how we can bail this planet out

From the mess that has been made

By all the mad games that have been played.

So we’ve devised a new game to play,

It’s called, ‘Listen to what the artists say’

In their songs and voices

Because we’ve ran out of choices.

All politicians and heads of state,

Listen before it’s far too late.

Listen to what the artists say in song

And sort out this world that has gone wrong! J

My alarm rings at six on the dot

And I’m out of my bed like a shot

And so begins another day

Of being spied on by the CIA.

They’ve a machine, kept under lock and key,

Which picks up brainwaves sent out by me.

This machine must have cost them a mint

As it turns my brainwaves into print.

When I think in English, that’s okay

And can be understood by the CIA,

But when I feel like a super tease

I send out thoughts in Cantonese

This must confuse them so they think

Their precious machine is on the blink

This makes me laugh to myself so much

I send out thoughts in double Dutch! J

Paranoid World 07

I went to see my doctor about my left ear

Because I was having difficulty in trying to hear.

I happened to mention the CIA,

My doctor said I needed to get away.

He said he knew a place that was really good

Where the linen was clean, with excellent food.

He said I could stroll in the gardens if I please

And smell all the flowers and admire the trees.

He said it was the least he could do

After all the CIA had put me through,

But then he told me to beware

Because after my holiday was community care

As the asylum on the edge of town

Was soon going to be closed down

Because of the upkeep of its grounds

So I wrote him a cheque for ten billion pounds! J

Note. I wrote this poem about 18 years ago

and since then Kingseat Hospital on the

outskirts of Aberdeen has been closed down.

Paranoid World 08

I try to lead a simple life,

I don’t have a mortgage or a nagging wife.

I walk to my work and everywhere I go

Whether the weather is sunny, rain or snow,

But as I walk about my home town

I’m convinced you’re trying to knock me down

With your assortment of motor cars

So I think I’d be safer living on Mars.

I think when you get behind a wheel

It alters the way you think, act and feel.

I think you think this world is about to end

And it’s driving me around the bend.

To accompany a green revolution

And to cut down on exhaust pollution

Please buy a bike and bike it

Or better still take a hike and hike it!

Note. I wrote this poem about 18 years ago

and since then I’ve taken on a mortgage

and I’ve almost paid it off. I’ve also met the love

and light of my life and one day soon I hope to

make her my wife. J

Paranoid World 09

I think I’m a normal bloke

Who likes to gamble, drink and smoke.

Betting on the horses is a fault

Where I help to fill my bookie’s vault.

I also like a pint of my pub’s best

When the next day is a day of rest.

I also know most people don’t need

To smoke the smelly tobacco weed

And as they conspire to make me stop

With no smoking signs all over the shop,

I can see the day coming soon

When to smoke I’ll have to go to the Moon.

All I ask for is a niche somewhere

To go and pollute my own air

When I get my nicotine craving bad

Otherwise I fear I might go mad!

Note. I wrote this poem about 18 years ago

and since then I’ve quit smoking over 12

years ago, quit drinking alcohol over 5 years

ago and I don’t gamble anymore except for

investing a pound or two in the lottery now

and then. Quitting smoking and drinking are

two of the best things I’ve ever done in my

life. Thanks for reading my ramblings. J

Have you ever contemplated

Things in life that are overrated?

Take sport as an example of one

Which people say they play for fun,

That’s all right as far as I can see,

But I think there’s a conspiracy against me

In almost every country worldwide

Because I’m not a fanatic fan of a football side.

Perhaps something is passing me by,

But frankly I’d rather watch paint dry.

If aliens landed from outer space

To learn more about the human race

And saw some humans chase a ball around,

While millions watched via cameras in the ground,

I’m sure to an advanced alien brain

It would appear that humans had gone insane! J

I’ve an honest occupation

Which pays quite fair remuneration.

I try to get on with my peers

Who I’ve worked with for many years,

But when I go for a cup of tea

I think they all talk about me.

I imagine the things that they say,

Like, ‘He hasn’t bothered to shave today’,

Then I realize I’m a little insane

Due to a chemical imbalance in my brain

And that my peers are not a bad bunch

Even though they don’t take me to lunch

So they can talk the whole lunch break

About how I keep making the same mistake

When I imagine they talk about me

When I go for a cup of tea. J

Paranoid World 12

I leave on the bedside light

When I go to sleep at night.

This is because I once got a fright

While on holiday in Crete one night.

The power cables had been brought down

And darkness reigned all over the town.

I couldn’t sleep and got out of bed

With unreal thoughts racing through my head.

I honestly thought I was dead

And voices spoke outside my head.

The voices reeled off all the bad acts I’d committed

Then said for them all I was acquitted

And told me to see the doctor that day

So he could fly me home without delay.

I got such an awful fright that night,

But now I think I see the light!

Note. I wrote this poem about 18 years

ago and I no longer leave on the bedside

light. I’m a big boy now! J

Paranoid World 13

I went to the local doctor that day,

He arranged to fly me home straight away.

When I arrived home I tried to explain

The experiences that had went through my brain.

Purgatory is the state I went through,

That’s the best way I can describe it to you.

I couldn’t sleep that night and paced the room,

I seemed to go back to my Mother’s womb.

Then began my life history trial

And all my transgressions grew in a pile,

All the bad acts I’d committed,

Then the voices said I was acquitted.

At home I told doctors I’d been dead

And recited what the voices had said,

But the doctors sent me to a hospital bed

And must have thought I was off my head!

Note: I wrote this poem about 18 years ago

and I just typed it into Word and my poem

passed the spelling and grammar check with

only a tiny alteration. I’m pleased my poem

only needed a small alteration. J

Paranoid World 14

I felt lost in Time and Space

And met the Maker of the human race.

No words could describe how I felt,

But I thought polar icecaps would melt

With the Sun shining down from above

Because I confused heat with love.

My Mother picked up the telephone,

Dialled and got the ringing tone

At my local doctor’s house

And the phone was answered by his spouse.

“Please send the doctor very quick

Because I think my son is sick.

He is behaving very odd

And thinks he’s in touch with God!”

Then I was sent where I could do no harm

Outside of town to the funny farm!

I found the funny farm to be ace

Because it was a peaceful, pleasant place.

I didn’t mind being an inmate

And found Time to pace and contemplate.

Schizophrenia affects the human mind

And effects 1% of humankind.

Schizophrenia is little understood,

Causes lots of distress and little good.

No psychiatrist fully knows

Why schizophrenia comes and sometimes goes,

But I know while I’m alive

I’m going to work hard and strive

To beat schizophrenia and manic attacks,

Depression, phobias and panic attacks

So I hone myself a type of brain

That’s down to Earth and sane!

For billions of years I’ve waited,

Watching what my laws have created.

Then when I decide to take my place

And decide to join the human race

To my amazement what do I find?

Doctors think I’ve lost my mind!

I took a poor lad out of the game,

I confused him about his name.

For years I’ve remained inert and dumb,

But before the next millennium

I’ll talk into everyone’s ear,

Words of wisdom everyone will hear

So the lad I took out of the game

Will not be different, but the same

And he will be proud of his own name

And everyone will know I have came!

My policy of non-intervention

Leads to a build up of tension,

Then when you reach the enlightening

The implications are frightening.

I try not to use neology

As I express thoughts on theology,

But with a pen or pencil in my hand

And the English language at my command

There are concepts I find hard to explain

With the limits of my mind and brain.

Such as the concept of Creation

And the startling revelation:

When two creatures have mated

New life forms are created,

From a human to a cleg

When a sperm enters an egg!

Note. ‘Cleg’ is a Doric word for a fly.

The practise of abortion

Fills me with abhorrtion.

I admire men and women in their lives

Who live with their partners, husbands or wives

And I don’t think it’s a sin
